The Infamous Green Recipe Box

Above you see the Infamous Green Box.  This box is cherished and sacred to me and has been in my life since I was a baby.  It may seem cheesy or unremarkable to you but it’s magic.  It belongs to my mother, and well, I kind of stole it.

Like many, recipes are handed down from generation to generation.  Some are in the form of stories as cookie dough is rolled out for cutting into snowmen or starts.  Others are frantically jotted down on cocktail napkins as the chef of the restaurant uncharacteristically divulges his secret recipe for Bernaise.  There are index cards scribbled on, typewritten pages passed by friends, newspaper clippings with ingredients laid out.  This particular box has all of the above.  Treasured handwritten recipes from friends and family long since gone.  Coveted recipes from famous restaurants that only exist in old movies.

In an era where you can type into a search bar and instantly get a list of rated recipes, boxes like these are few and far between.  I think that’s such a sad thing.  This box represents a life of curiosity, family around the table, holiday feasts, full bellies, and laughing souls.  As time goes on I will be transcribing much of the box to this site as a tribute to my mother. The pickiest eater in the universe but the woman who first taught me what delicious meant. It’s my mother’s and I guard it like the family jewel it is.
